PORTER GROUP BACKS WAIKATO REGIONAL THEATRE

Porter Group is pleased to announce their recent support of the ongoing Waikato Regional Theatre build project. Company Directors Murray and Robin Porter have made a significant donation to the project which aims to reinvigorate the Hamilton CBD.

The Waikato Regional Theatre project, which has been underway since July 2016, seeks to create a shared theatre space that celebrates and boosts the cultural, economic, and social life of the Waikato Region for generations to come. “The Theatre is a community project that’s only been possible with the staunch and generous support of the local business community. Porters are valued supporters of the Waikato Regional Theatre”, said Waikato Regional Property Trust Chair Ross Hargood.

The $80m Theatre will feature a 1300-seat auditorium and will be designed to accommodate a wide variety of performances. The space is set to become a central hub that celebrates local culture as well as nearby Waikato River views. The history of the Theatre’s Victoria Street site is also a key aspect of the new builds design, which will retain the heritage streetside façade of the 1920’s Hamilton Hotel and other historical architectural elements.

Porter Group has a long history of supporting local community projects and initiatives and is pleased to add this exciting venture to its charitable portfolio. “This Theatre will be a valuable addition to the Hamilton township and greater wider community, and we are proud to be a part of it”, said Director Murray Porter. Porter Group’s community involvement extends beyond commercial projects to widespread support of many grassroots organisations. The Porter family has always embraced a low public profile whilst simultaneously providing financial support of many rugby teams, BMX, motocross, motor racing, the Westpac helicopter, Hamilton Gardens, the Cambridge Velodrome, and the Hamilton Anzac memorial.

Completion of the Waikato Regional Theatre project is expected in early 2024. Foster Construction are spearheading the build, signing the contractor agreement recently in August 2021. Porter Group, by way of Porter Access and Porter Hire, will be present on the Victoria Street site as the project advances in the coming months. “The Waikato Regional Property Trust is working with our main contractor (Foster) to ensure we have local firms involved in the Theatre build, and Porters is playing their part as both an on-site contractor and project sponsor”, said Mr Hargood.

Porter Group looks forward to seeing the project progress and anticipates that the Waikato Regional Theatre will prove to be a valuable asset to the Waikato community for many years to come.

Special thanks to Momentum Waikato for facilitating this donation.
